What is the Bear Factory?
The Bear Factory is the leading international retailer of custom-made teddy bears. Founded by Hamleys of London, the world famous 240 year old mega toy shop, the Bear Factory has established stores in six countries worldwide. The first Asian Bear Factory opened in October 2003 in Shanghai's Xujiahui Grand Gateway mall.
The Valentine's Day challenge
In four short months, the Bear Factory Shanghai has attracted over 2,000 customers to into the store to create their own cuddly bears. The savvy digital marketers at the Bear Factory have been busy building a rich customer database. The Bear Factory came to 21 Communications with a challenge: attract past customers back to the store for Valentine's Day together with their boyfriend or girlfriend ... and generate new sales for the store.

SMS your honey's name for a free mini-bear!
On February 10th, 21 Communications distributed an SMS mobile text message to the Bear Factory permission database of 2,000 opt-in customers. The first message contained an irresistible offer: just send a reply SMS with the name of your honey to win a free mini-bear from the Bear Factory!
Within minutes of the distribution, the names began pouring in: "Xinguo", "liliang", "Dingyang", "Sulei", "Xuxin" ...... An unprecedented 18% of customers responded to participate in the campaign!

Upon receiving the messages, 21 Communications immediately replied with a personalized message. Each participant received a unique SMS invitation containing his/her honey's name: "Just show the SMS at the store on February 14th together with [your boyfriend or girlfriend's name] to receive your free mini-bear!"

The couples arrive: converting foot traffic to sales
To ensure a high return on investment, the Bear Factory targeted campaign participants with a special follow-up sales offer. Upon claiming their free mini-bears, participants were given the opportunity to “buy one bear, get the second for half price” for Valentine's Day. The Bear Factory enjoyed one of its busiest days on record while expanding its customer base with this unique Valentine's campaign!
